How Munich became a second home to Events Consultant Darren Wilkins

Darren Wilkins is an Events consultant for GT Events and has worked within the industry for thirty-three years. Much of this time has been spent in Germany supporting individual and group clients visiting the many exhibitions and trade fairs there, and with many of these taking place in Munich, it has become like a second home. Here, we speak to Darren about how he came into the events and exhibitions, his experience and knowledge of Munich, along with some of his favourite places to explore whilst there.

A passion for languages has been the main driving force behind Darren, working in the travel and events industry since studying his A-Levels in 1989. When looking for work thirty-three years ago Darren wanted an opportunity where he could use his many languages, including German, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch just to name a few.

His fascination with languages started from a really young age, beginning with French in Junior School which sparked his interest and German in his secondary education after that. Subsequently he picked up others along the way and it became a real passion for Darren alongside his love for football. He feels lucky to be able to pick languages up and practice them in their native countries with his work, as well as explore the history and cultures around the globe and always makes the effort to learn basic language for places he plans to visit.

It's no surprise that Darren feels as though Munich has become a second home after visiting well over seventy times in his lifetime and has met some great friends and even his wife along the way making it such a special place. His first-time visiting was in 1991, working as part of the rep service for the Oktoberfest and has been to Munich at least once a year for up to four weeks at a time. Some of the key business events and exhibitions that take place in Munich attract people from all over the globe. These include Drinktec, IFAT, Innorgenta and Bauma generally these are held at the Messe Munchen. For the upcoming event Drintec we recommend Eden Hotel Wolff and Hotel Ambiente as the ideal locations to stay in 2022. Darren’s role is to book, co-ordinate and support our clients who are usually business groups or many individual companies attending an exhibition.

Being so accustomed to the city, when Darren has some downtime he knows the city well and often chooses to relax, meet up with friends for dinner, go to football matches or take a stroll through the beautiful, peaceful English Garden which he considers to be much like our famous Hyde Park.

Munich is truly a home away from home for Darren, right from the moment he steps off the plane. His love for Germany doesn’t stop at Munich, Darren loves Germany as a whole and has attended many exhibitions and events in Dusseldorf year on year and is really looking forward to being back working with his clients face to face as the exhibition and events sector bounces back after the pandemic.
